These extremely talented actors and actresses in most cases, have been in several productions, some professional, and can more than hold their own.
Freaky Friday, is the story of a mom and daughter, who magically exchange places for a day, and walk in each other's shoes. At first, they think it will be a breeze ... the grass is always greener. But then, the reality sets in. They find out the truth - how tough the other's life really is. My life is not easy, but there is no one I know, I would want to exchange lives with. My 13-year-old niece came to the musical with me. She loved the show. I asked her afterward, if she would want to change lives with her mom. Her response was a firm no!

The two leads in Freaky Friday were amazing! Cassie Bleher, as the MOM, is extremely talented and someone to watch. Rivers Harris has the name of a star, and a bright future ahead of her. Jack Setran, as ADAM, would have stolen the show if Bleher and Harris weren't so perfect. He brought us the 'cool teen' of today. The show is updated to reflect today's youth. Audrey Deubig, rocked playing the assistant, KIARS GEOLINA, the quintessential 'mean' girl. And John Perry Wishchuk, won us over as FLETCHER, the little brother. The show does not lack talent. The ensemble perfect. These kids want to be there and it shows!

I think my favorite number was ....
"I Got This". Sung By Katherine, (mom ), and Ellie, daughter ... when they take each other lives on. If being onstage is your dream, checkout the SDMT Academy Summer Intensive - several tracks with three age groups. www.sdmt.org/academy
FREAKY FRIDAY, is the perfect Spring Break bonding experience for mom and daughter. They may want to spend time with their friends - but, they will both enjoy the show - and get a feel for what your life may be like. Will definitely bring you closer.

LAMB'S PLAYERS Theatre:
Presents . . . CHAPS - The Musical

Lamb's Players Present, Chaps. " Refreshing Entertainment, with characters that pop, and have you laughing out loud again and again." By Jahanna Beecham & Malcolm Hilgartner. Directed by Robert Smyth. Musical Director, Jon Lorentz, and choreography by Deborah Gilmour Smyth.
The already extended Chaps is more of what I refer to as a show, A musical where cowboy music is performed on BBC radio, in London 1944. Live broadcast in which the real cowboy band does not show up. Thus the BBC Announcer, producer, a sound guy, a guy that sings commercials, along with the cowboy's road manager, who did show up and has the costumes and music, are forced to make a last minute decision to go on as the Cowboys. Creating a highly entertaining production.
Six Brilliant actors are brought together to pull off an early Americana band. What I love about the show are the characters they have developed. Each character is so individually unique and masterfully p[ortrayed, no other actor could possibly capture quite the same flair.

My favorite and only because he was the sound effects guy, which I feel may be the hardest role with the least accolades, is Arusi anti. Kudos for an outstanding job. Charles Evans Jr., the producer for the BBC, is forced to go on because his job is on the line. Captures us with his reluctance. Although none of the cast is eager to perform. Manny Fernandes, plays the main cowboy, with an English accent, the role may be difficult but funny, Steve Gouveia, is the guy who stopped by to sing his commercial, meets the famous American cowboys, and gets roped in. At least he can sing. Ross Hellwig, is the announcer, using his wit to adapt. One female in the show, the extremely talented Cattie Grady, with another masterful performance. This cast is epic.
Some of the songs featured are, "I'm an Old Cowhand," by Jonny Mercer, " Salty's Fish and Chips," ( The commercial ) by Malcolm Hilgartner," " Wahoo," by Cliff Friend, and " Jingle Jangle Jingle," by Joseph Lilley & Frank Loesser. The eighteen-song show list is listed in the program. A nice touch.

The play is about playwright William Gillette, an actor who brought Sherlock Holmes to life on stage. If fact, it is GILLETTE who created the persona everyone worldwide recognizes instantly as Holmes. He brought Holmes to the stage, he brought a curved pipe, deerskin cap, and long traveling cape with him. Knowing this would have a great stage appearance.
In the play GILLTTE is shot at while performing. With his love of fun, games, and Sherlock, he decides to play detective. He hosts a New Year's Eve dinner party (year 1928), in the Gillette Mansion, East Haddam Connecticut.
The Game is Afoot.

The 413 Project, is only six years old, but now performs in San Diego and Los Angeles. Known for it literary works, The Game's Afoot, was a departure. I hope they do more mysteries - although, this was a murder comedy actually. Whatever ... they were awesome.
I guess they can do whatever will work in The Grand Tea Room - I'm sure an acting challenge in itself. After watching several shows now, it's a special treat to come to one of their 413 shows, and one you should give yourself ... and perhaps ... someone special!

Robin Thompson, directed and acted in the Lead of GILLETTE. I Ioved it when he debated with the inspector, over who would conduct the questioning of the suspects. They made a great team ! The Inspector was played by Li-Anne Roswell, who brought her own flavor of talent to the show. There are only eight cast members in the show - one is murdered, and you still have a hard time guessing the murderer. Amy Dell, a talent great at delivering the serious one liners, plays GILLETTE's mom. Kim Summer, is absolutely fabulous, as the malicious DARIA CHASE. Simon Bright, an actor in the same play as GILLETTE, was played by Tim Abelovski, an actor who has emerged to our delight, from behind the scenes. His new wife, the 'ingenue', is played to perfection, by Maria Hotovy. Steven Pappas, plays best friend FELIX, perhaps the funniest in the show, and Brannon Shaw ... who is my favorite character. A fantastic performance of MADGE, Felix''s wife ... This cast kills.
The costumes for this show were to die for.
The dresses absolutely gorgeous, as the show is a high society dinner.
And, as for Daria's necklace, it might be worth killing ... for itself.

YOUNG ACTORS THEATRE:
Presents . . .

Per Kathy Carpenter:
Young Actor's Theatre (YAT) presents Mamma Mia! A cast, filled with actors who rocked as genuine real characters, who touched our hearts with zippy ABBA music, that makes you want to jump up and dance ... and sing along.
You are encouraged to have a good time. Sing if you want to!
Mamma Mia, is a 'jukebox" musical, where a show is written around the songs of a single performer, or, in this case, a group. Directed by Jean Isaac, who has always loved the exhilarating music in the show, and now, appreciates the story as well. The choreographer is Wilfred Paloma, and musical director Jim Thompkins Maclaine. Something new for Young Actors Theater,
I believe, is a live hidden orchestra. By that, I mean you can't see them - but, they mastered the ABBA score flawlessly.

For those who don't remember, this is basically DONNA's story - mother of SOPHIA, who invites the three men, that could be her father to her wedding. All SOPHIA wants, is to be walked down the aisle by her dad - none of them know of her existence.
DONNA is not sure who the father is, and we all play the guessing game - and it all takes place on a Greek Island.
Twenty three ABBA tunes sprinkle through the plot - including "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," "Chiquitita," "Super Trooper,"
and "Take a Chance On Me."

For me, I've seen "Mamma Mia," three times within this year - along with two other huge wonderful productions - but this show, was on another level. The actors, perhaps because the venue is more intimate, seem like people you might know - and this is their personal story. My mom shed many a tears, and I felt a few tears trinkle down my cheeks, as SOPHIA asks her mom to help her prepare for the wedding ceremony. Realism a stroke of talented actors. Of course, the show is mostly filled with fun, laughter, and light-hearted singing and dancing.
Katee Drysdale returns to the YAT Stage as SOPHIA, after getting a Bachelor's Degree in THEATRE from Sonoma State. Her voice remains incredible - although, not the long-haired blonde you might expect, which makes SOPHIE believable. This cast, is an unexpected cast. YAT usually has kids or teens in most roles. This production, featured a more mature cast, along with some young adults - still giving us a theatre experience you won't soon forget. Kim Hendrix plays DONNA. In the other two shows, I did not care for the actress playing DONNA. I guess was not too sympatetic to the person everyone in the play loved. However, Kim pulled off a more likable DONNA ... doing a fabulous job!

DONNA's friends are the characters you love. Paula Steiger-Bloomer, as the ever marrying flirty TANYA, with excellent acting. Michele Dixon , plays ROSIE, the other friend ... a the more down to earth one. Again, you probably have a friend just like her.
Next, we have the 'dads'. Dave Trickey, plays SAM. I must say, after watching the movies, he had the look and mannerisms down - which, can also be said for Tony Powers as BILL In each, I could see the original actors. As for John Nettles, playing HARRY, he did not have the same affect ... but filled the role nicely.

This is a big cast, and I can't name everyone - but, I do want to mention SKY, played by Jose Luis Martinez Cecena, because he is the fiancee. Jose brought a sincereness to his role. The entire cast is what makes this show whole ... Bravo for a job well done!
Kudos to the set designer. The fountain and Taverna,

San Diego Musical Theater (SDMT) starts the 2019 season off with the Gershwin musical Crazy For You. A heel kickin' dynamite musical romantic comedy loved by the audience. I don't know about everyone one else, but when I got home, I was singing, dancing, and whirling about the living room, totally inspired by what I'd seen.
I could not ask for anything more.

SDMT (SD Musical Theatre), gives us fabulous Broadway quality production in a semi intimate venue. Personally I feel you would not enjoy Crazy For You more, if you did see it on Broadway. Directed by Kirsten Chandler, and choreographed masterfully by Jill Gorrie, with a Book by Ken Ludwig, Music by George Gershwin, and fabulous lyrics by Ira Gershwin - of course, with their hidden live orchestra conducted by Don Lemaster.
A more simple plot you have seen before - a boy, a girl, and a theatre that needs to be saved. Simplicity, that lets our minds drift from everyday stress for a couple hours, and lets us enjoy the romantic singing, electric dancing, and award quality acting ... exploding before us. The Show plot take place in New York and Deadrock, Nevada.

David McBean (photo),
who plays BELA ZANGLER, is a incredible talent, I appreciate each time I'm blessed to watch him perform. David, also plays a second character, EUGENE. But, says the hardest part for him, was learning to dance alongside the fabulous dancers in the show - who of course, make the dancing seem so easy. This is a show for those who love tap, and old fashioned dance fun, filled with high octane energy!

Jeffrey Scott Parsons, is another truly masterful talent. I remember seeing him as the Emcee in Cabaret, at the Welk Resort, and thinking he was amazing. The role of Bobby Child, that he plays here, is like a polar opposite character, - lovable, charismatic, and full of charm. He's definitely a 'star', who knows how to captivate the audience. Tayler Mettra, plays POLLY, the girl, with a made for Gershwin voice. Katie Gucik, is perfect as the child's mom. She also played PATRICIA - showcasing her acting abilities. Kelly Defrouins, is shining as IRENE ROTH, Bobby's fiancee. I caught her in "Young Frankenstein", as INGA, and her acting abilities are evident ... and growing stronger.
These actors are amazing - but the entire cast and dancers, are what make the show epic!

As for my favorite numbers, can I say all? However, I did very much enjoy watching BOBBY swoop about and sing, "I can't Be Bothered Now." I loved the tap. I loved "Naughty Baby", a show stopping number between IRENE and LANK. There was another incredible scene with "What Causes That?" - BELA and BOBBY do a mirror image sort of thing ... yet not.
Enough can not be said about this show. You just have to see this one yourself.
Why not treat your Valentine?

What I love about community theatre is that the people are ordinary people from next door. They are the knock em dead looking celebrity, from the movies, that has as many 'takes' as they need to get it perfect. They don't always look how you might think they should, because you are thinking of the movie star you love. They have one shot to bring it. Make you believe in the story. The need to sell it - and, the cast of Guys and Dolls blows you away, selling us to the core .... fabulous!
Guys and Dolls has been called the perfect musical comedy. It opened on 46th and Broadway, in 1950. Frank Lesser and Abe Burrows turned Damon Runyon's short stories into a book musical. The musical ran for 1200 performances and won the TONY for Best Musical.

The story takes place in 1950, New York, with gambler NATHAN DETROIT, trying to lock down a location for his floating crap game. The only available spot appears to be a garage, where the owner wants $1000 cash up-front. To make capital, he bets the infamous SKY MASTERSON, known for taking crazy bets, like ... that he can't take a save your soul sister to Havana. We have two romances Sky and Sister Sarah, Nathan and his long time beloved Hat Box headline singer Adelaide .. Adelaide wants to marry Nathan and insists he give up craps.
"Sit Down - You're Rockin' The Boat"
Although all scenes are wonderful, my favorite is the incredibly choreographed craps game towards the end of the show. We needed to see the game in action and Mary Allison Dunsmore did a masterful job with this.

NATHAN DETROIT, is played by Dave Rivas, who brought you a Jackie Gleason persona; a spot-on performance by Alyssa Anne Slagle, was perfect as ADELAIDE. SKY MASTERSON, was played by Christopher T. Miller, who brought us smooth and suave. Olivia Torres, as Sister SARAH, brought forth toughness - refusing to give-up on her saving souls, until swept off her feet. Nicely-Nicely Johnson, was played by David Guthrie, with an amazing over-the-top performance. Another great over-the-top performance, was a small, but stand-out job from Cassiopeia Guthrie.
The other saints and sinners, brought the village together ... rounding-out a production not to be missed!
Score includes "A Bushel and a Peck", "Luck Be A Lady", and "Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat" - with a full orchestra under conductor Larry Wilson. Not easy to fit in such a small space - but Coronado Playhouse always finds a way.

The courtroom tale of Jack Beanstalk. Did he diabolically murder the giant, or was it self defense?
Hear great cases on both sides.
The stage is set-up like a courtroom. Audience members are selected to be the jury. Let the battle begin.
For some reason, I always love courtroom and lawyer stories, on television or at the movies. This was my first trial play - well, except for "To Kill A Mockingbird", which I also loved. The fight for justice.

The lawyers were masters, as they lead the witness's through their testimonies. Samantha Gordon as prosecuting attorney, was made for this role. George W. Orange III, lawyer for the defense, brought a lawyer of realism. Joel Colburn, plays the judge. I felt he could have been stronger. In some instances, he was so judge-like, and yet, in other others parts ... well, he did not shine. The witnesses, did shine. Shari Lyon, played JACK's mom, Mrs. Beanstalk. What a great character-witness for the prosecution, Lucinda Moaney, next door neighbor, was made for the role.
Jamie Penry, plays Mr. DOWNFEATHER Goose, witness for the defense - with a fairy tale character, you can pretty much make it what you want. He did a fabulous job. The other fairy tale character, played by Lauren Ferraro, plays JOAN O'HARP. John Hansen, plays the role of JACK, doing a superb job, of what you would expect from his role. Ford Neha Curtiss, plays the old man, perfectly. Rounding-out the cast, Pete Schwartz, as Bailiff, Linda Synder, as the court clerk, and Tami O'Connell as the court reporter.

Brent A. Stringfield , the director, did a wonderful job bringing courtroom drama to life. Two woman from the audience, who work for the court system, told PowPac, they did an impressive job with all aspects of being true to life.
I think the writer could have fine tuned some of the time elements. They seemed a bit confusing, and hard to follow - and, they did not always match up - but overall, a great job - starting with lobby, with the cow JACK sold, a goose, an different aspects from the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

"SHE LOVES ME"

Per Kathy Carpenter A Classic Old Fashioned Romance - Entrancing, and fun - for us romantic souls
who believe in destiny and happily ever afters!
Book by Joe Masteroff, Music by Allan Salkin, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and
Directed by Ted Leib. Musical Director Terry O'Donnell.
The Musical is version three of the play., written in 1937 by Miklos Laszlo, an Hungarian playwright., called Parfumerie.
"In 1940 it became a James Stewart- Margaret Sullavan film.called "The Shop Around The Corner. In 1949, It became a Judy Garland - Van Johnson Musical, "In The Good Old Summertime". Then it 1998, they brought the story back as one of the classics in the romance writers field, "You Got Mail," with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Those of us who remember the movie love it.
She Loves Me, premiered on Broadway, in 1963, and was only so-so. Revived in 2016, and became the first Broadway show
to be live streamed.
The story, takes place in 1934, in a European city, and involves two shop clerks, who barely tolerate each other - and, whom unbeknownst to one another, are the 'pen-pal' they have secretly fallen in love with .... through lonely-heart ads.
The set, designed by N.Dixon Fish, was an elegant looking mobile woman's shop, selling perfumes and lotions, and that could be moved in and out. The costume by Dawn Fuller Korinek, Wig design, ( yes that's an actual job), by Kat Senior-Scott, and whoever did the make-up, I mention these ... because it was amazing! The women in this show, really fit the time period. You would never know they are from today.
Community Theatre, usually don't do musicals often, mostly be cause of their limited space. But personally, I wish they would do more. Especially ones like this one. While I was watching the show, it reminded me of old Doris Day movies. Silly little stories,
but ... ah so romantic !

Georg and Taylor Magee as AMALIA in the Scripps Ranch Theatre production of ... "She Loves Me."
14 member in the cast, that;s huge for Scripps. Which meant another person doing a great jot,Marc Caro-Wilcox, who did the choreography, and played ib the ensemble.Luke Monday, had the lead of hero, Georg Nowack. Monday reminded me of Bob Saget, tall, lanky, kind of serious. Taylor Magee, plays Amalia Balash, the heroine, not someone you would probably match up, but that's what made the show work. My favorite was Tara Sampson, who plays Ilona. another shop clerk. She is fistulous. So in character, a perfect choice, I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it better. Danny Campbell does a masterful job as the shop one Maraczek. We round out the shop clerks with Tanner Vidos, and Joseph Grienenberger.Josh Bradford, delivers his role as delivery boy nicely. As in any musical the ensemble make the play. At least there would be no play without them. In this case they played all the shoppers, sang, danced, and all other characters needed. Sometimes I think the ensemble are the most talented of all. The ensemble included Steve Lawrence, Andrew Paiva, Krista Wilford, Marc Caro-Willcox, Eden Young, Cassie Bleher, and Kailey O'Donnell. Wilcox and Young also gave us a tango.
The last thing you need for a successful musical is great music. In this case provided by just two musicians.Terry O' Donnell, conductor and pianist, and Grant Clarkson, Bass.
One more thing She Loves Me has to offer is a holiday spirit. Although, the show traverses through many season, Which Leib did an awesome job with. The romantic ending takes place during the Christmas season. The perfect romance to kickstart your Holidays.

They use an interesting special effect to tell the stories of how Sherlock survived his final encounter with Moriarty - with the background, as a strong looking stone structure. For the effect, Holmes and Moriarty sort of disappear into the structure - this fascinated me.

Seven top notch actors pull together to create this first rate masterpiece. Richard Baird takes on WATSON ... straight forward, and to the point of his own genius. Dr. EVANS, is played by Si Osborne, with a quiet brilliance. HOLMES (1), is Jacob Sidney. Each SHERLOCK has his way of making you believe he's the real HOLMES. Sidney' has the HOLMES manner. Drew Parker as Holmes (2) has a harshness about him. The third man, played by Christopher M. Williams, portrays the innocent. The other characters, are the 'orderly', played by J. Todd Adams, and the 'woman' played by Alice Sherman. Ms. Sherman, also plays the 'matron', doing a great job making the audience laugh.
This play will keep even the most avid fan guessing till the end ... filled with twists. If you think you have it, guess again. This is the mystery you should not miss. Best thriller I've seen this year!

Young Frankenstein as you have never seen before. The story is the same with your favorite funny lines - but,
we now have great music with wonderful lyrics also written by Mel Brooks. Fun, lively, and hum-able catchy tunes - incorporated with new jokes, and humor that catch you off guard ... and make you laugh out loud!
In anticipation of seeing Young Frankenstein as a play, I recently watched the movie on a flight back home from London. As did my sister. we were in agreement - the film had it's moments, but was not as funny as we remembered. The musical was total enjoyment. The kind of old song and dance fun a musical should be - old style Broadway .. yet fresh.

San Diego Musical Theatre did a great job of connecting to the movie, by keeping the character 'looks' the same we know and love. The brilliant Kevin Hapso Koppman, playing FREDERICK FRANKENSTEIN, and looked just like the mad Gene Wilder, who was actually sort of handsome in this movie. He did Wilder proud with his acting, and has a fantastic singing voice. Jonathan Sangster, plays IGOR, my favorite - so funny, and just a total entertainer. Christine Hewitt, plays FRAU BLUCHER - and, I remember signing her praises before (with reason), she rocked FRAU BLUCHER. Hewitt looked just like Choris Leachman from the movie, and even surpassed her acting. Melina Kalomas, plays ELIZABETH, and you might ask who's that? It's FREDERICK's fiancee when he comes to Transylvania. You may not even like her in the movie - but you will love her in this show. She has the glamour wardrobe, and old Hollywood style songs ... Kalamas is fabulous. Kelly Derouin, plays the enticing INGA. Danny Gersonde, plays THE MONSTER - a role I'm sure was difficult, just to be able to move in those heavy looking shoes. When he did "Putting on the Ritz", he was indomitable. Troy Tinker-elliot brought his talent to the stage as Inspector KEMP.

Of course, a musical needs, an ensemble to make the magic happen, and it goes without saying this troupe did exactly that. They brought the village together ... to make the show a hit! The entire cast is sensational, and this one is not to be missed.
Gene Wilder
Twenty scenes, twenty one songs, and a lot of work, just on the staging of this one. Every scene was a different - the location, some repeated, but most were different. SDMT did a great job, giving us the flavor of each new scene, with a few 'special effects' thrown in. I love the music and songs. I think my favorite were ... Elizabeth's "Please don's Touch Me," and of course, the spectacular versikon of "Putting on the Ritz".

The 413 Project Southern California Repertory Theatre Presented - Sense and Sensibility September 7th - 23rd, 2018, at The Grand Tea Room , Escondido California. Together again for Tea, Theatre, and Jane Austen.
A partnership that is double the pleasure for theatre and tea lovers alike. The 413 Project Master of creating immersive dinner theatre. (a live theatre experience, which physically differs from the traditional one) does an epic job with their historical pieces in The Grand Tea Room. The setting is perfect. With the charming atmosphere Louisa Magoon, owner of the full service Tea Room and Gift Shop, has worked hard to accomplish over the past several years.

The story of Sense and Sensibility centers upon two sisters, ELINOR and MARIANNE DASHWOOD. When their father passes away, Regency Law gives their entire fortune away to half-brother JOHN. The DASHWOOD’s fortunes turn sour, when JOHN’s manipulative wife FANNY convinces him his father only meant for him to provide emotional ... not financial support. Thus, the DASHWOOD sisters are cast out of their home, and left to rely upon the charity of their mother’s distant relation Sir JOHN MIDDLETON. However, before they leave for the country, ELINOR falls in love with FANNY’s brother EDWARD. And MARIANNE, the younger, later falls for the mysterious JOHN WILLOUGBY after the move. Drama, love and romance then ensue.
Katherine Nielsen portrays ELINOR, the eldest, and more serious sensible sister. While Paige Townsend, plays the younger and memorable MARIANNE. She was oh so perfect - she gave us spunk, and delighted us, even if her character did have her flaws. Both actresses did a tremendous job with the large amounts of dialogue and
flawless English accents ... Wow!

However, the sisters are fully supported by a fantastic cast of characters. Mrs. DASHWOOD, played by Erin Floyd-Smith, is a sort of a cross between her two daughters. Sensible, with a light side - a talented acting choice which lent an air of realness. Brandon Brixey as EDWARD FERRARS, brings ELINOR's love to life. His shyness and serious nature were a perfect match for Nielson’s ELINOR. William Buckwalter plays JOHN WILLOUGHBY, who is seemingly the perfect match for MARIANNE …….. or is he? Buckwalter brought his charisma to the role, winning a place in the hearts of the audience. COLONEL BRANDON is the final suitor for Miss MARIANNE's affections (played by Brandon Phelps. (I know all these Brandon's, right?) PHELP’s character brought the devotion and romance the novel is so well known for. The ultimate question, is whether the COLONEL is too old to claim MARIANNE's heart? The emotion behind PHELPS' performance leaves the audience torn between WILLOUGHBT and the COLONEL. Who will Miss MARIANNE choose?
Phebe Bridges, plays LUCY STEELE, a rival with ELINOR, for EDWARD’s attention. LUCY is just as naive, as ELINOR and BRIDGES does justice to the role. Next is Heidi Bridges as Mrs JENNINGS. With all these serious characters, we need the light of some confusion, and Mrs JENNINGS is the gossip queen for the job. Bridges delivers the humor and makes us laugh. Another humorous light in the room, is Sir JOHN MIDDLETON, played by John Ratliff - who delivers an over-the-top performance!

Remaining, we have Daniel Robinson, whose talent is shown by his three characters - the butler, the wishy-washy brother JOHN DASHWOOD, and the terribly grumpy house guest Mr. PALMER. His performance as Mr PALMER was a particular talent the audience loved. And finally, the cast is rounded out by actress and director Caitlyn Buckwalter in the roles of FANNY DASHWOOD, and Mrs PALMER ... the woman of the hour. Her talent is showcased in this play, alternating between the two opposites of evil FANNY.
On another note, I want to say how much I enjoyed the details off the stage. The program for the show, including the artwork was beautiful. On the inside of the program, I also loved reading what makes the actors tick. The meal including the high tea, champagne and take away tea packet and bookmark, were all lovely. Thank you to Louisa Magoon and the Grand Tea Room for an enjoyable experience!
The 413 Project Theater has become known for the literary nature and high artistic quality of their productions. Why not come out to see for yourself? A chance to explore a classic and enjoy a lovely high tea.

Can’t get tickets? The 413 Project will present something a little different for next time: Ken Ludwig's The Games is Afoot at the Grand Tea Room Feb. 9th – March 3rd, 2019. Valentine’s Day was never so spooky as with this Sherlock Holmes themed mystery.

The premise is funny. A mother who wants for her daughter to have the perfect wedding ... the wedding she did not have. The daughter is okay with everything, but then her ex-boyfriend shows up at the door on her wedding day.
The show takes place in late summer, 1981,Cincinnati , Ohio. With P.B. (played by Heather Armstrong), starting off the play, narrating and giving us interesting facts about the year. Armstrong, plays the youngest daughter, and bounces about the room showcasing her talent. The room is the a modest house living room, with a closet, bathroom ... off to the side. A matching floral sofa and chair dominate the room. A bar, which they hit quite frequently, is located in front of a fireplace. Of course ... I loved the set.

The stand out is Richard Rivera, who plays the dad, DOC. He makes me laugh. The more I see him, the more I like him ... talented and funny. Chistine McCoy, plays his wife DELIA - however, she didn't quite match Rivera ... something was off. McCoy did do a fantastic job on the 'soliloquy' she delivers to her daughters on meeting their father, and the wedding they shared. COURTNEY, the Bride, is played by Melanie Mino, does a good job, as the confused bride. MELANIE is the middle sister, played by Deirdre Maloney, who does quite nicely, with a meatier role. William Parker Shore, players the Groom, HARPER. I loved HARPER, the other funny one in the show. Then we have RYAN, the ex-boyfriend. I guess you could call him the 'straight man'. Most of the funny
lines came at his expense.
Christopher Scabo & Mellanie Minor

Christopher Scabo & Mellanie Minor

My favorite scene comes between the ex-boyfriend and fiancee, and COURTNEY the bride, when the men bond. And afterwards where HARPER practices his physiology skills on RYAN
The plot does not really make a lot of sense - but it comes with sort of a twist ... and a happy ending.
The bride COURTNEY, wears a stunning wedding dress in act two - makes you hope for everything to work out.
If you are a Black fan, enjoy the theatre, or being a fly on the wall in someone else's living room ... come out!

Larry Raben, had the fun of directing Welk's first musical in their newly renovated theatre. Gone is a lot of the Lawrence Welk memorabilia. No longer a museum, although a lot of the pictures remain. A time line history of the man himself. The lobby appears to be larger. A lot more seating with big snack bar. A glamorous atmosphere. But not much really changed. As for the stage the 'wings' are gone. I always rather enjoyed the parts of the musicals that would take place there ... Oh well, progress.
WELK's renovated new Lobby Interior
Choreographer, Karl Warden. BRAVO ... an amazing job, all those dancers in what seems a small area.
The dancing throughout the musical rocked!

Mamma Mia, is the story of a young girl searching for her father. For me, what I love about this show is the music. I grew up with ABBA, and I love their songs. A strong beat, with fun simple lyrics you can sing along with. The real story is of SOPHIE's mom DONNA, a free spirit, and though I don' really care for her character or story - SOPHIE's story I can identify with. She is the opposite of her mom, and want's a traditional white wedding - including, to have her father walk her down the aisle. Unfortunately, her mother doesn't know who that is. SOPHIE invites the three (possible father candidates) to her wedding ... unbeknownst to DONNA. The show, takes a twist, but ends happily - although we do not find out who the father is, everyone has a guess. That's part of the fun. No matter, the setting of a Greek Isle in 1999 ... and a party-like atmosphere is what we love.

Olivia Hodson, plays SOPHIE. With a fabulous voice and innocent demeanor she makes a great SOPHIE. Misty Cotten, plays DONNA. She brings a certain spunkiness to the role you can't deny. Her friends are wonderful. Barbara Schoenhofer as TANYA, and Nancy Snow Carr, as ROSIE, almost steal the show - hilarious and wild, so much fun to watch. As for the fathers, Lance Arthur, plays BILL, the Australian - his accent alone causing women to swoon. David S.Humphrey, plays SAM - a long time favorite of mine. He really delivered the emotion in this one. You could just see the love for DONNA in his eyes. Mike Bradford, plays headbanger HARRY, the third dad, letting his awesomeness shine. Two more characters of note. Richard Bermudez, plays GROOM SKY. Let me just say this - if you saw the "King and I" at Welk, he played the King and what a job he did. I would never recognize him in this role. The King is bald, and Sky is a cute beach boy - a versatile actor and a true talent. And, PEPPER, played by Chris Bona ... Wow! A secret weapon with epic moves

We have Winifred Murdock of Winifred Murdock Creative Works in Orlando Florida, who designed and provided these fabulous colorful costumes - and of course, this show wouldn't happen without music director Justin Gray, who conducted the orchestra, and made this magic happen ... with 27 songs in the show.
Mamma Mia, here we go again, how can you resist one last summer party? The musical is playing is through the rest of 2018 - so you can enjoy that staycation or endless summer feel anytime. Come have some fun with some one you love.

Scripps Ranch Theatre:
Presents . . .
Alan Ayckbourn's
Scripps Ranch Theatre Presents 'Communicating Doors," by Alan Ayckbourn. Directed by Jacquelyn Ritz. Vastly Entertaining. Silly, and fun, with something for everyone. A comedic chiller, with a heart felt twist.

Sir Alan Ayacbourn is a prolific English playwright of 73 plays. Communicating Doors number 46 somewhere around mid career. In case you are wondering what a communicating door is? In America, we call them connecting doors - such as in hotel suites, which is where this play takes place. Also, in this play, it's the connection between adjoining worlds ... the time travel vehicle.

Kate Rose Reynolds (plays POOPAY/PHOBE). Ms. Reynolds was brilliant. I loved her as POOPAY, and hilarious as the Special Sexual Consultant. Then, even though she is the same person as PHOBE, it's as if she is a different character entirely. RUELLA, is played by Wendy Waddell - a more stable character, but just as wonderful, they both are equally strong leads. Paul Morgavo, plays JULIEN, the villain - and words can't describe the brilliance of his performance. I've seen Morgavo act before, but nothing like this. Chilling, he could give Hannibal Lecter, a run for his money. REECE, the husband, is played by Charles Peters, also, hilarous in the opening sequence. That leaves us with the hotel security guy, HARLOLD, played by John
Wells III - who also leaves you in stitches. It would be a difficult choice to pick the funniest person in the show. The remaining cast member is Sibongile Ngako, playing first wife JESSICA ... a surprise performance.
A smart cast delivers an epic performance.

The set includes several doors, a window that is up a few steps, which gives one of the funniest scenes in the show, and a bathroom, which is shown, through a partial wall. There is a desk between doors, and a sort of love seat bench - and of course ... a mini bar over by the window.

Cast of . . . BLITHE SPIRITS

Per Kathy Carpenter:
North Coast Repertory Theatre presents Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit - Brilliantly acted, complete entertainment from another realm, that has you leaving the theatre in high spirits. Directed by Rosina Reynolds "I will ever be grateful for the almost psychic gift that enabled me to write Blithe Spirit in six days ... during one of the darkest years of the war."
One of the most enjoyable factors of this play is the brilliant dialogue. Coward had a extensive vocabulary, and was a true wordsmith. He crafted his dialogue masterfully - and it was a pleasure to hear his wit delivered skillfully by this superb cast.

One of the most enjoyable factors of this play is the brilliant dialogue. Coward had a extensive vocabulary, and was a true wordsmith. He crafted his dialogue masterfully - and it was a pleasure to hear his wit delivered skillfully by this superb cast.

In the opening scene, we witness a lot of this witty repartee ... as the backstory is reveled. Although we know their is a ghost in the story, it's awhile before the ghost appears. Sit back and enjoy the art of a master at work. Reynolds selected actors whose talent allowed the words to flow flawlessly and suit them perfectly
Blithe Spirit takes place on a summer's evening in a small village in England. An English farce. CHARLES is a writer, who invites a local psychic to dinner and a seance in order to obtain in secret information for his next novel. In first wife ELVIRA appears after the seance as a result. No one can see her but CHARLES, which makes for some great scenes. No one, including the psychic knows how to send her back.

The stage is a fabulous set. I heard others remarking on the enjoyment of the as well. So, it's not only I who appreciates the great work of art that goes into creating some sets. This was a English drawing room. Center stage - we had double opening doors. When open, they revealed a hallway with yellow wallpaper and a picture - to the right and left of the double doors, built in bookcases filled with old hard bound books. The wallpaper in the room had a wide yellow stripe. We had a small table and chairs (stage-left), and a sofa from the era (stage-right) behind, on the wall a fireplace. Next to that a desk with a phone - classic and chic. On the other side, we have the old gramophone. The drapes covering both the window and french doors, a blue, green, and yellow flora print, with red-ish pink pops of color - center stage overhead, a chandelier. Twin matching carpets in the two different areas.
The ghostly costumes were kind of silver - also adding a touch of glamour chic.
The ghostly costumes were kind of silver - also adding a touch of glamour chic.

Our leading man, is J. Todd Adams, playing CHARLES - lending his expertise to the witty repartee. Joanna Strapp, more than his equal as RUTH, his wife. A flawless delivery. ELVIRA was played by Teagan Rose. The playful, carefree spirit. Definitely brought blithe to the stage. Michelle Marie Trester, plays the maid EDITH. She kept the audience laughing every time she came on stage. Madame ARCATI, played by Susan Denaker, takes eccentric to a new level. A true star. The supporting cast of Gil Berry, as Doctor BRADMAN and Ava Burton as Mrs. BRADMAN, add an authentic note as the more down to earth characters in the show.

PowPac Presents "Deathtrap" By Ira Levin. Directed by Brent A. Stringfield.
A delectable chiller . . Satisfying your inner need for surprise.

Per Kathy Carpenter
As a teenager, I used to watch "Rosemary Baby's" and "The Bad Seed." I love the sort of good old fashioned thriller type movies. They do not make them like that anymore. "Rosemary's Baby," was written by Ira Levin. No wonder I liked the plot. Deathtrap, had a Broadway run of five years, and still holds mark for longest record for "longest running comedic thriller on Broadway." The actress playing MYRA on Broadway, Marian Seldes, is in the Guinness book of Records for playing the role 1,793 times ... "as the most durable actress".

Deathtrap is a thriller - not a mystery. You see the murder, but question everything. The story is filled with delightful twists and turns. The story takes place in Sidney Bruhl's study in the Bruhl home in Westport ,Connecticut. The set is tastefully designed to project warmth and chill. A french window, leading to the outside, and two long windows are draped with patterned curtains. We have a beautiful gray chaise, and a stone fireplace. The wall has two different weapon collection displays on adjacent walls. On another wall, is a sort of huge bookcase, where the drinks are located ... and then we have SIDNEY's desk.

SIDNEY, a well known playwright is having writer's block when he receives a sure-fire hit play in the mail, written by a student from one of his lectures. The author wants Bruhl's opinion. The play becomes a bit confusing at times, with first on play called, Deathtrap and then another. Also, the first act is the strong act. Superbly crafted - where the second act, I didn't quite get the very end ... but, is well worth your invaluable time.

Lamplighters Community Theatre Presents "Crimes of the Heart."- smart, engaging, Southern Entertainment. Directed by O.P. Hadlock. Captivated by the THREE MAGRATH SISTERS from the first moments. The play won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was nominated for the TONY Award for Best Play. In 1986, the play was novelized - which is funny, because my mom said the play would make a good book - and usually the books are first ... and then comes the play.

The story takes place in the kitchen of the McGRATH family in the town of Hazlehurst, Mississippi - in the fall, five years after Hurricane Camille. A slice of life piece, (which I normally don't care for. I want a beginning, middle, and end.) of a day in the life of the Mcgrath sisters. It's LENNY 's, the middle sister's birthday, and she's celebrating alone. The younger sister, shows-up from a non-Hollywood signing career, to show support for the older sister who has shot her husband. The younger sister, MEG, has forgotten LENNY's birthday. BABE, the older sister, arrives at the house fresh from jail, also to have forgotten LENNY's birthday. The three spend the afternoon, evening, and following morning, together in this piece. With drop-ins from a cousin CHICK, a pain in all their sides - DOC, MEGS, ex lover, and BARNETT LLOYD, an infatuated lawyer for BABE.

CHICK, is played by Sandy Hotchkiss - a thorn for the Magrath sisters - but the comedy relief of the show. Hotchkiss is extremely funny is all her scenes ... perhaps even a scene stealer. LENNY, is played by Rhiannon McAfee. She is the serious sister, with the weight of the family - caring for the dying grandfather, the one I can identify with. McAfee poured her heart into the role. MEG, was portrayed by Aline Racic. She is the fun loving sister, who strived for a singing career. Normally, you may not like this character much, however Racic won me over. She did an amazing job acting, and bringing MEG to life. BABE, was played by Devi Noel - sort of crazy, but not really. Noel was perfect for the role. DOC, was played by, Jeff Hillman ... he brought the testosterone. He was sort of a good guy/bad boy type. BARNETTE LLOYD, the lawyer, was played by Brendan MacNeil, who was cast perfect role his role. Hadlock has assembled an amazing cast. They worked perfectly, creating a evening of enjoyment. Escaping from your life into someone else's craziness ... the audience loved the show.

The set (of the family kitchen) from another era, welcomed us from the time we sat down. Inviting us to the table of someone else's life. Community theatres strive to do that. Wonderfully crafted stage sets. This show is three acts - which means two intermissions.
Come join the Magrath, leave your troubles at home - and put yourself into someone else's shoes.

You may remember the 1988 movie starring Tom Hanks. Everyone loves Tom Hanks, especially when he plays a big kid. This version stars Joel Beyrer, and he was definitely a big goofy kid! Owen Schmutz plays little JOSH, an almost thirteen year old small kid ... tired of being little. The last straw comes, when in front of his crush at a carnival, he is kept from going on a ride because he is too short. Wallowing in sorrow, he wanders around and spots ZOLTAR and speaks. He makes a wish to become big. The next morning he wakes up big. When his mom refuses to believe it's JOSH - he goes to his best friend BILLY.

BILLY, played by Joshua Kelly, is an audience favorite. He was great. So much young raw talent. Madeline James, plays the young woman who falls for JOSH. She is amazing - a pleasure to watch and listen too when she sings. This is a Musical as the movie is not. Jacob Rodebaugh has a pleasant voice - and, is an actor taking
his role seriously.
The stage was lined with giant piano keys. The theatre, is intimate with cabaret style tables, which adds a nice change of pace. With actors of all ages, becoming a family, to bring community theatre to SanTee.
I had three favorite numbers in the show. "Cross The Line", with the adults and younger kids coming together ... "It's Time," with the kids performing, and "Coffee Black," with the adults performing.
However, as I think back all the songs are fun and relevant.
It's all about having fun ... Everyone needs fun. Let you inner child come out to play for awhile,
enjoy the show ... and stay cool.

Hairspray is more than a novelty as the musical explodes onto the Horton Grand stage. With the underlying theme of 'segregation' in the early sixties - the show gives us a simplistic fun and entertaining history lesson. One, that on some levels are relevant today. This Baltimore Fairy Tale, is about overweight teen TRACY TURNBLAD, and her dream to be a dancer on The Corny Collins show. I know I always love the singing and dancing so much, at first I forget, it has the message of acceptance for all.

My favorite song in this show was "I can Hear The Bells", sung by TRACY. I missed hearing LINK sing the song - however, the dancing is all good.
One aspect I did not care for, was the little touches of 'raunchy' they added in. In my sister and I opinions, it did not add anything to the show, and was a little uncomfortable watching. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see the show. But, it is not drastic, and do not let this hold you back. You will love the show. The Horton Grand Theatre is a smaller venue, and the show was sold out on a Wednesday. So, hurry if you do not want to be sold out!

As always, the Don Le Master Band was flawless - even though at this venue, they play in another room. We need them. The show would not be a musical without music. Toe tapping is encouraged, even dancing at the end of the show, with "You Can't Stop The Beat" - The rockin' fun song TRACY dances to ... for Miss Teenage Hairspray.
As we all strive for acceptance in one form or another, I will leave you with a quote from John Waters "A spoonful of acid helps the happiness go down."

Into the Woods, is a difficult piece of experience and kudos to the kids who work hard to bring us this production - many long hours for all involved. The director, Jordan Hall Campbell and his team, musical director Rachael Groeneweg, with assistant directors, Alex Bezdeka and Elizabeth Smith, lead not one but two complete casts through the process.

Into The Woods, the modern day classic that mashes up the story of a Baker and his wife who want a child, Cinderella, who wants to go to the King's Festival, Jack-and-the Beanstalk, who needs to sell his cow, and Little Red Riding Hood, and who wants to visit Grandma. Now, throw in a curse from a witch, and off they go into to the woods.
With these large casts, I'll shine light on my top four - The Baker, played by Matthew Gerchufsky, a serious actor, with a pleasant voice. He took his role to heart. Both Cinderella's and Rapunzel's Princes, played by Patrick Resolime and Al Leonard. The both sang nicely, and brought the humor to the piece. "Agony," the Princes duo was my favorite musical number in the show ... always fun. And these two really put in the passion. Alyson Gerchusky, took on the role of the WITCH - bringing us a total drama queen attitude that worked perfectly.
The entire cast brought out the best in each other!

North County Repertory Theatre Presents: Stephen Sondheim's TONY Award winning, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum: If this play were a dessert, it would be a hot fudge sundae with whip cream and a cherry on top - deliriously full, filling your laughter craving ... directed by David Ellenstein.

First produced on Broadway in 1962, the play is inspired by ancient Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus, who basically invented comedy. Classified a "farce", this show has every device in the comedy toolbox to make us laugh. That's why no matter what type of comedy you find funny, they hit you with something that makes you smile or laugh ... and the chuckles keep on coming.
FORUM, is a tale taking place in ancient Rome - when HERO, a wealthy young Roman, falls for a girl next door in the house of courtesans. His servant SENEX wants nothing more than his freedom. He bargains with his young master. If he gets HERO the girl, he wins his freedom. Unfortunately, the girl, a virgin, has been sold to someone else. Let SENEX's wheeling and dealing begin.
Director Ellenstein has assembled the perfect cast.. With thirteen actors, it's the largest production North County Repertory produced, because of it's limited stage space. The actors pulled that off without a hitch. It didn't even appear to be a lot of people to me - I'm use to large casts even on small spaces. Ellenstein and his choreographer Colleen Kollar Smith worked the logistics out perfectly.

As for this fabulous cast., we have Andrew Ableson as SENEX - a true master of comedy. Then we have Keviin Hafsu Koppman, as HYSTERIUM, another master actor. A comedy could not miss with these two feeding-off each other. Add to the mix David McBean, playing LYCUS, the third lead, and another true craftsman - and no wonder we have silly grins. Melinda Gilb, as DOMINA, I just had to love her, her costume, her hair, and her shoes - not to mention being a hoot. The cast round-out with Chris M. Kauffman, as HERO, the lovesick youth, Noelle Marion, as his girl - with John Greenfield, Luke H. Jacobs, Jason Maddy, missy Marion, Amy Perkins, Omri Schein, and Jean an outstanding cast. Let me say a quick word about ensembles. In a lot of cases, they make they show, playing several characters - and working even harder than the main cast and receiving no credit. In this show they work very hard ... Kudos.

Three Roman houses constituted the set and backdrop of the show. These also contributed to an epic show, with Scenic Designer Marty Burnett. Also, this show, had four musicians to provide the music ... Ron Council, James,Beauton, Sean Laperruque. and Jim George. My favorite song being ... "Comedy Tonight".

Shrek The Musical Presented by Young Actor's Theatre. With Book and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Music by Jeanine Teson. Direction by Chjristine Cordova, Assistant directer and choreographer Greg Good ... with Musical Director Moriah Angeline.
"A Totally Epic Happiness Experience"

You start the show with a smile on your face that never leaves. Shrek, a children's story on the surface, does such a great job of delivering the theme that makes us different ... makes us strong. Many of us feel different for one reason or another. It's what makes us unique and lets us shine. If we have the courage to believe. The world would be such a dull place if we were all Stepford.
Shrek is the tale of an Ogre who goes on a quest to rescue a princess - in order to help out the Fairy Tale characters who have been thrown out of the village of Duloc. Along the way he meets Donkey, a fabulous character who becomes his traveling companion and first friend, and falls in love with his rescued Princess Fiona.

Shrek was played by Anthoni Powers in his second YAT show. He was a star. He definitely owned Shrek. FIONA played by Mia Apalategui. This is her first YAT role - but she won a leading actress award for her last role. Her talent shines brightly teaming up nicely beside Powers. Audience favorite DONKEY, is portrayed by Isaiah Payne, coming into his own talents. And then we have LORD FARQUAAT - hated by most in the movie. However, when brought to stage, the character is also the is the villain you love to hate. However, because the actor who portrays him, in this case, David Limon, plays the role on his knees - you just can't help but like FARQUAAT. Limon was extremely charismatic and totally rocked FARQUAAT. Other character to love Alanna Morgan as GINGY. She had the perfect attitude and a tremendous voice. Of Course, it takes a village to carry off a play like this - hats-off to the entire ensemble.

With Junior Theatre, the families also become involved supporting their off-spring, becoming a theatre community. In this case, they were the ones who created the moving parts that made the show happen ... Thank You. The castle tower they created was exquisite. I was so glad it was brought back on stage for the final bows. It was the perfect backdrop for FIONA and SHREK to stand out ... like the stars they were.

They also created a gnarly fire-breathing-dragon for this show. They out did themselves on this one - Thanks for bringing the show to life. The audience appreciates your long hours of labor. I hope the tower can be used again somehow.

One of my favorite songs starts off the musical "A Big Bright Beautiful World". Then of course, who doesn't love the "I think I've got you beat" number with SHREK and FIONA - competing against each other ogre style. "Freak Flag" of course, fabulous with all the Fairy tale creatures standing up for themselves.
My twelve year old niece, and a friend who attended with me ... loved the show. My niece actually watched the Broadway version on Netflex - and said this rendition was pretty spot-on with that version.

Let's fill up the theatre at the Kroc Center for the remaining shows. This Musical will be the talk of your summer.

I saw the movie when it first came out, and since no matter how much I enjoy a movie - I usually don't re-watch, preferring something new - thus had forgotten the story. A princess' journey, but with a different outcome than traditional favorites. Disney started doing that, and I'm not quite a fan of these new endings. Yes, this is a story of two sisters journey and coming together - but, we have the guy and I guess I'll always love the guy/girl love's true kiss.
That said, this condensed version of the play did not quite work for me. J Company performers acted the heck out of the musical - yet for me, it just did not work as a play. The snow kids were cute, but it did not really have the "snowy feel of frozen". The opening song by the villagers, which repeated at the end, was sort of bizarre - and I didn't get the connection. On the other hand my sister loved the show.
The musical is about two sisters ELSA and ANNA, torn apart when ELSA's magic almost kills little ANNA. After years of not seeing each other, they are brought together on ELSA's coronation day. Earlier in the day, ANNA has met and fallen in love with HANS - and when she tell ELSA, ELSA can't control what her magic does ... and freezes everything. ELSA goes away. In the process, she has frozen ANNA's heart. ANNA leaves six (6) in charge, and heads out to find ELSA. Along the way, she meets KRISTOFF, his reindeer SVEN, and OLAF - everyone's favorite snowman! Unfortunately in this shortened version, we lose some of the light- heartedness of the story - including a lot of the fun stuff from SVEN and OLAF.
Moira Hall played ANNA, who becomes the favorite sister, as Sophia La Rosh who plays ELSA, is basically a villain - when she turns everything to ice and then shuns the village. The Princess's captivated the audience with their liveliness and beauty. OLAF is played by Ethan Cruz. He did a masterful job bringing the snowman to life - which Landwehr did as sort of a puppet, with Cruz standing behind him and moving him, and doing the 'voice', as opposed to being in a snowman suit ... not an easily managed task. An acting stand-out for me, was a little green guy from the hidden folk known as PABBLE, played by Garrett Currier. Garrett has a bright future ahead of him. Little ANNA and ELSA adorabley played by Leila Lashgari and Elle Levine. The handsome but evil HANS, is played by Brendan Dallaire. And the rugged should-be hero KRISTOFF is played by Brayden Handwerger As you know, this is a
J Company Production with probably a hundred kids lending their talents to make the musical an epic show.
J Company Production with probably a hundred kids lending their talents to make the musical an epic show.

My favorite part of this show was ANNA's coronation dress - an absolutely gorgeous rich chocolate brown velveteen gown, with a sparkling bodice. A gown truly made for a Princess. A close second was ELSA's, gown when she took off her black cape in the second act - revealing her famous sparkling blue dress. The was cape fabulous, and when she spread her arms and the cape lit up as she sang "Let It Go" ... a real showstopper. Kristoff's fur vest - also a great costume - as well as the Snow cute costumes The costumer chair Kimberly Reckles did herself proud.

I also enjoyed the numbers "A Little Bit of You," and "Do you want to Build A Snowman." I loved the number "For The First Time in Forever". ANNA was wearing her wonderful gown, and it brought a joyness - I hadn't felt in the story until then. The first part of the show seemed so serious.
This is Disney and J Company magic coming together. Let your little princesses dress up and see their idols live. They will be enthralled. They could care less about the story. They remember the seeing and meeting ANNA and ELSA and live forever in this enchanted environment.
Also, for one lucky little girl J Company is running a silent auction for a beautiful one of a kind ELSA dress.

Lamplighters Community Theatre Presents Love Sick, by John Cariani (author of Almost Maine), gives us an unromantic comedy for the romantic in everyone. Love American Style meets 2018. The funny and not so funny ... in today's relationships.
Kristen Fogle directed, which I'm thinking was not so easy. Instead of one cast of characters, this is nine vignettes. Nine cast of characters to focus on. Nice job. Nine actors, most of whom played two different roles - doing a tremendous job portraying different people. We believed in every character

The vignettes centered around a Super Center. The commonality in the stories. Each skit encountered a different relationship issue people face today. Love American Style a seventies sitcom, focused more on the lighter side, where you could see the fairy tale ending, and being a traditionalist I liked that. These stories, are unfortunately in today's world more realistic, and not necessarily happily-ever-after. I'm thinking this show may be for a slightly younger audience than the one Lamplighters generally attracts. The audience was mostly full this opening night, and that's a good thing. I do think each vignette was funny and well acted. I enjoyed the show. Am just not a slice of life enthusiast.

Obsessive Impulsive, starred Andrew Dean Pearson, and Whitney Wegman. Two strangers meet in the Super Center for the first time and fall in love at first sight. This vignette may have been the most difficult to act. During the entire skit, the actors had to recite practically every line at the same time ... carried-off perfectly. The Singing Telegram starred Cristyn Chandler & Andre Urbano. A single woman preparing for a date, receives a singing telegram from the Super Center. What?!? starring Omar Ramos & Andre Urbano. Kind of a cute take on two guys trying to make things work. The Answer, starred Andrew Dean Pearson and Ray-Anna Ranae. A couple about to be married and the guy has second thoughts - pretty funny!

Uh-Oh, starred Morgan McGuire & Whitnet Wegman. A married couple, each wrapped-up in their individual tech worlds have a conversation. This was my favorite skit. I loved Morgan McGuire. Not sure if he is new to acting, or just at Lamplighters - but I loved him in both his roles. Lunch & Dinner starred Cristyn Chandler & Steve Murdock. A married couple discussing their day. Murdock always delivers. Forgot, starred Morgon McGuire and Ray-Anna Ranae.. A married woman celebrates her birthday. Where was I ?, stars Cristyn Chandler and Carla Navarro. Two gals trying to figure things out. Destiny, the final vignette, brings us back to the Super Center where ex's have a chance encounter - Starring Steve Murdock and Carla Navarro - bringing us full circle.

If this type of show is your thing, or if you want to try something new, I encourage you to come out ... relax and let you life go for a couple hours ... make Lamplighters part of your summer plans.

Point Loma Playhouse:

Point Loma Playhouse Presents Wally's Cafe, a comedy by Sam Bobrick and Ron Clark, and directed by DeAnna Driscoll. Compelling, funny, life affirming, and romantic. The Point Loma Playhouse only does a couple plays a year. I personally wish they would do more. Always a pleasant experience - an intimate welcoming environment with mostly character-driven plays.
Plays with only a few actors, can be hard to carry off. This play had only three people - but, you never find yourself wandering. You connect with the characters right off the bat, and journey along as you follow their lives over a forty year span - from the late forties to early eighties.

This is the story of WALLY, who opened his dream cafe out in the middle of nowhere ... the Mojave desert. The cafe gave him an identity and he would never give that up ... he owned it. Unfortunately, there is one other restaurant and it is closer to the road. His wife LOUISE, reluctantly follows WALLY from her beloved New Jersey home. Not so much a fan of being out in the middle of nowhere. But back then, you stuck by your person through thick and thin. Imagine that. The third character, is JANET, their first customer, a young hopeful, leaving her small hometown, on her way west to become a star. The show follows the three lives as it examines dreams, relationships, fear of the unknown, and true friendship.
James Steinberg, plays WALLY - WALLY, the dreamer and the man that will never give up on his dream cafe. Dena Mattox, a Point Loma resident, takes on LOUISE, the reluctant wife. And, Pati Reynolds, is returning to her love of acting - taking on the role of the young want-to-be. Three equals, no one outshining the others. Each holding us captive as their stories unfold. Actors shining at their craft.497

Two other items made statements - A Beautiful jukebox, standing in the corner of the diner, and the amazing desert scene painted on the backdrop. Mary Dietz did the artistry on the "Painted Desert". Thanks, Mary ... this was the perfect touch.

Per Kathy Carpenter -- San Diego Junior Theatre 70th season presents Mr. Popper's Penguins. Cutesy, Heart warming Family fun entertainment. Directed by Ricardo Vanlenzuela. Base on a children's book written by Richard and florence Atwater in 1938. Book and Lyricsby Jody Davidson. Music by Brett Schrier.
You may remember the Jim Carrey film version in 2011. The movie version was a sort of updated adaptation of the story. The play takes place in Stillwater in the 1930's.

Mr. Popper is a dreamer. He dreams of exploring in far off places. He paints house from Spring to Fall. Then has plenty of time to dream as he waits for the next painting season to come around. One day as a result of a letter he sent he receives a surprise. A penguin. He and his children are captivated. Then the penguin starts to act funny. Popper writes to a special doctor, who sends he another penguin. Soon there are little penguins everywhere posing an entirely different problem.

This show is a little different for San Diego Junior theatre in that they usually do shows with many roles. In this show although a huge ensemble, the show itself only had six roles, and of those only Mr. and Mrs. Popper really get to act much. Mr. Popper was played by Justin Canning doing an incredible job to portray the fanciful , light hearted, dreamer. My favorite though doing an out standing job Sarah Chan as Mrs. Popper. She had the job of portraying a serious woman of the thirties. she did all the family worrying about the household affairs. Standing behind her husband at the same time.

BILLY and Janie were the children, played by Luke Renner and Ritchie Lynn Nguyen. Then we has the mail penguins. Captain Hook, played Chris Nalick and Gretta, by Milly Cocanig. The noises they made were so cute, and the way the walked around, jjust like real penguins.
Then we have the whole penguin clan. Papa, Mama, and all the little babies played by the ensemble. I don't know all the names, but in the second act in order to save the penguins the become a performing act. They March and tap, and just stupendous.

On a tiny Greek Island, a wedding is about to take place. Twenty year old SOPHIE, who has lived her entire life on the Island, finds her moms diary. She invites three possible men who could have been her father to the wedding. The story revolves around her trying to find out who her real dad is - and what her mother will feel, seeing them out of the blue for the first time in twenty-one years.
Katie Sapper is SOPHIE, a girl who wants answers. After all, a girl needs a dad to walk her down the aisle. She brought curious and playful to the table. Bets Malone, a local Vista girl, played DONNA, her mom - the real lead of the show - as confused as her daughter, with unresolved emotions. The three potential dads were portrayed by Robert J. Townsend, as SAM (he returns to the role, after having been on Broadway and in the National touring company), Lance Arthur Smith, as BILL, and Jason W. Webb, as HARRY. The entire cast brought the delightful party atmosphere the show calls for - a celebration of family and friends!

There is no shortage of professional guidance if your protege is interested in acting, singing and dancing theatre style. San Diego Musical Theatre is hosting a Summer Conservatory.
Bring It On, being the result of last year's first offering. Beginning July 9th - August 17th, SDMT will feature something for everyone 5-20 years - musical theatre 'fundamentals' for beginners. Theatre Genres workshops, and an advanced Master Class Series. If the talent that came out of last year's conservatory is any indication, you definitely will get your money's worth. For more information ...
call 858.560.5740 or email carolyn@sdmt.com.

For this show my 12 year old niece attended with me. She is a huge Bring It On fan. She says this production is not the one she is familiar with, but it's the same concept. She loved the show. There have been six installments, starting with Bring It On in 2000. Bring It On Again 2004 - Bring It On : All Or Nothing in 2006 - Bring It On: In It To Win in 2007 - Bring It On : Fight To The Finish in 2009 - and Bring It On Worldwide Cheersmack in 2017. All the renditions vary on the same themes, competitions, rivals, friendships, and lessons learned. I'm not sure which one this is based on ... but not the first. Bring your teens, they will love this piece of theatre - because they can identify. It's bonding time.
In the opener three parts were played by understudies. Two being the lead roles. Cassie Bleher, had the major lead of CAMPBELL ... taken on last minute. She brought her script out the second half, but barely refereed to the it. With a first class performance, she led the cast to an epic win. Josie Baker, played SKYLER the second lead - and Olivia Kuykendall from the ensemble took on KYLER ... both were outstanding! |

Others of note were, Vivian Romero, as BRIDGET, the parrot school Mascot, (and I loved this costume), to the girl who transferred schools, and Wow! I've seen her in several shows now, and she continues to be amazing. Joshua Isaiah Foster, is playing LaCienega - a girl, extremely impressive in this transitional role. Kiara Geolina, plays NAUTICA, and is a definite standout. Allyce Calloway brings in the voice. Zoe Goldstein, also brought greatness to the table.
The expressions these kids bring are they natural or hard work?
I know my face doesn't reveal the depth these actors showcase.
Epic cast,- Epic Win.
The Director of this musical, and in charge of the Conservatory, is Carolyn Agan, and the Choreographer is Kyle Hawk.
The Music Director is Kimbely Moller, with Costume Design, by Keira MCGee - because, you might just think these are
the teens everyday ensembles,
but, they are costumes ... the plain stuff that is!

Once The Musical, is meaningful masterful music, featuring a multi talented cast, in the show of the summer. Non- stop music - including original ballads during the show, and Irish music between scenes. The entire cast sing, act, play all the instruments, and in one highly impressive number, even dance while playing their instruments. All this, and they do fabulous accents also. To use the word talented on this cast is a total understatement.
Michael Louis Cusimano, who won our hearts in last summer's "Big Fish", is back as the guy - the lead. This Irish guy, starts the Musical playing us a song on his guitar, he then puts away his guitar and is about to walk away, and give up on his dream. A woman is watching (a Czech woman), played by Cattie Grady.
She calls him on his action, she is tough on him, and refuses to let him give up. She forces him make an album, and go after the woman he loves. They fall in love, but this is not a happily ever-after tale. It's complicated. The theme is, don't let fear keep you from going after what you want.

The stage set is an Irish bar, in Dublin, and it an unusual act - this bar on stage is actually serving guests. Patrons are usually kept from walking onto a stage. But for this show, guests are invited into the bar before the show, and at intermission. Above the bar, on a second level, the beautiful Irish countryside stonework, with climbing ivy and lampposts. Stunning work by Sean Fanning. The cast/band performs Irish music before the show, lending a party like atmosphere - setting a tone ...an Irish tone. The play is much more serious.

Leading this stellar cast is Michael Louis Cusimano, as the guy what woman could resist saving? Cattie Grady, as the emotionless woman. And, what a performance by Deborah Gilmour-Smyth, as BARUSKA, the mom. A small role, but when she told the story of The Little Man ... wow, I never heard a story told with so much passion. The other person I'm going to point out is Manny Fernandes (portraying Billy) ... because I loved his character. Everyone gets a shout-out, because it was the cast as whole that made this show rock. Kent Brisby, plays the DA, the ex - girlfriend is played by Abigail Allwein, ANDREZ by Luke Monday. REZA, was played by Terri Hason, SVEC, by Arusi Santi, IVANKA (in this show) by Bianca Rodriguez, the Bank manager, by James Michael McHale, the Emcee, by Jimmy Marino, and EAMON, by Dave Rumley.

Scripps Ranch Theatre, presents Eric Coble's, FOR BETTER, directed by Eric Poppick - A Romantic Comedy For The Digital age. Funny for all ages. We could identify with all of them - because, we all know at least one person ... like each character portrayed - captivating us, and drawing us right into the drama.

Did you know 95% of Americans own a cell phone? Which makes this play ... a pro pro. The double entendres were hilarious. KAREN BAEDEKER, starts the show, by informing her dad (the older person element in the play), she is going to marry someone she's barely met. The guy proposes on the phone, and is calling her dad, to ask for her hand. Her sister is not happy, nor is a male friend. Most of the show, is people talking on the phone - and the trouble this can cause. In the end, it's all about your huh moment? You'll have to see the play, to find out what that is. - but you will probably find it relevant.

WALLY BAEDEKER (the father), is played by Fred Harlow - who provides the sage advice, in a heartfelt moment. KAREN, is played by Kay Marian McNellen ... am I doing the right thing ... playing neurotic well? FRANCINE (her sister), is played by Heidi Bridges - who may have had the most difficult role - showcasing her talent in many different aspects. My favorite character, was LIZZIE, the friend. Flamboyant, flirty, and fun, LIZZIE is played by Erica Marie Weisz. The funniest person for me, the one who made me laugh the most - is the sister's husband, played by Charles Peter, who is extremely funny. STUART, the male friend, played by Kenny Bordieri - the unrequited love interest ... of course we needed him to round out the story. He played his part to perfection.

Normally, I love the sets at Scripps. The scenario on this show, consisted of a family couch and end-table ... off to the side. With five large cell phones gracing the backdrop, a nice stone tile floor, and people rolled in and out ... in desk chairs.
I loved LIZZIE's colorful wardrobe. My twenty something niece, liked FRANCINE's suit dress at the wedding. The wedding dress woren by KAREN was stunning. My niece loved the show. Romance in this complex world ... is a show for all ages.

PWhen was the last time you watched the Little Mermaid? Do you know The Disney movie version that we all know and love came out in 1989? Time really does fly, almost thirty years ago, that blows my mind. Maybe you have fond memories of the movie from your childhood and have yet to have the opportunity with your child. What better way to share the magic than in person. The play has something for everyone, and at this venue "Off Broadway." in Santee you are up close and personal. Although, kids may have a problem seeing, if you shift some you should be able to work it out.

I shared the Musical with my seven and nine year old nieces. They loved the show. The nine year old said, her favorite character was SABASTAIN, played by Hunter Katz - to which I realized watching the show, sings the big songs we know and love. "Under The Sea," and "Kiss The Girl". My favorite, was SCUTTLE, played by Analisa Reynoso - she brought the laughs and made me smile.
The thing I love about The Pickwick Players,
is the fact they bring all ages together in their shows.

ARIEL, is a Mermaid who wants to live in the human world. Her father King TITON, forbids her to have anything to do with humans. Like a typical teen she rebels. Giving up her voice, to the evil URSULA for legs and chance to become part of the world that fascinates her. Because it's Disney ... we know everything works out in the end.

To make things even more fun the Pickwick Players, are doing sing-a-longs at their Saturday and Sunday matinees.

PowPac Presents STEEL MAGNOLIAS by Robert Harling - "The funniest play that will ever make you cry." The touchstone of friendship. Six women showing every level of friendships. but standing together through thick and thin. Funny, endearing ... and powerful!

Steele Magnolias takes place in Northern Louisiana in the 80's. At Truvy's Beauty Spot. Once again as you walk into the Powpac theatre and look at the stage - the set of an beauty shop, the atmosphere is set. You gaze on this perfect set up and drift into a happy space ... escaping before the play even starts.
All the action takes place in this Chinquapin, beauty shop. With wise-cracking Truvy, and her new young assistant Arnelle, so unsure of herself ... Ouiser ... who complains about everything ... Clairee, an eccentric millionaire ... M'lynn and her daughter Shelby, who is about to marry. The plot focuses on the women and their lives, as they move over the course of a couple years - with each scene ... in a different season.

This cast personified the women they played. They mastered the friendship. Amy Stanley, plays Truvy, bringing the humor. Sutheshna Mani, brings the odd one out, as Arnelle. Kate Hewitt, shines as Clairee. Ashley La Selva, brings in the freshness of youth, as Shelby. She would rather have "30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing". Kaly McKenna, brings us the wisdom of a mom, as M'lynn. Diane Norwood (right photo) brings us the busybody, we know and love factor ... "she's not crazy, she's just been in a bad mood for forty years". Directed by Brent A. Stringfield ... who knows how to assemble a cast.

Grossmont College Theatre:
Presents ...

"The Game is afoot, Watson-and it's a dangerous one!" Who isn't compelled by the deduction and observations of Sherlock Holmes. His intelligence seduces us. Drawing us in. Well, maybe it's Watson's story telling that compels us. Any in case we are all in. This is one of my favorite Sherlock stories. Perhaps because he shows his humanness. He actually shows feelings for a woman and enthusiasm in going after his archenemy Moriarty. Grossmont's production features a strong, well-acted cast, and if you are a Holmes fan you should not miss the show next weekend.

Sherlock is about to pack it in when a case he can not resist arrives on his doorstep. The King of Bohemia is about to be blackmailed and the woman involved is Irene Adler, a woman from Holmes past. With Doctor Watson, his trusted companion, at his side, Holmes pursues first the case, and the affections of Miss Adler, and his adversary, behind it all, Professor Moriarty.
Doctor Watson starts the show off and is played by Symonne Still. Watson is a woman. Strong and talented., Sherlock is played by the winsome Kevin Rupe. Kjing of Bohemia played by Kayheen Anderson, presents realism in his role. Eliana Payne and Sofia Scafidi, as the two women roles in the play may be the stromgest roles in the show. Excellent job ladies. jon Agee portrayed Moriarty. Representing the element of danger. James Larrabee and and Sid Prince , played by Kristian Power and Avery Rushton bring the humor. A well rounded cast.

London, Spring of 1893. I loved the backdrop. Three of what I thought of as I sat waiting for the play as stain glass shaped pieces. A larger one in the middle and two slightly smaller on either side, Covered with a fleur de li pattern. Set upon three steps that ran across the stage. The floor tiled in rock/brick. A Gothic demeanor. To my surprise and with today's technology later in the show, wha la, Stain glass windows. Then a library, and wallpaper. The show also features fabulouscostumes.
Great rendition. Grossmont in my book is becoming known for their strong acting.and great set atmosphere.

San Diego Musical Theatre (SDMT), presents Roger & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC. San Diego Musical Theatre may have scaled down their venues, but not their quality of productions. SOUTH PACIFIC, is a light-hearted, tender look at difficult issues ... handled masterfully. With a fresh look at a classic Roger & Hammerstein show, SDMT moved from the Spreckels Theatre, to the more intimate space of The Horton Grand Theatre, also in downtown San Diego ... for their 2018 Season.

I was not sure how it would be, when I was used to the big lavish productions at the Spreckels Theatre - with shows that compared to Broadway productions. However, I have now been to two shows at the new venue, and I must say, I'm enjoying the intimacy the shows invite. We still have musical theatre, even some toe-tapping - just not grand scale production numbers.
SOUTH PACIFIC, is filled with 1940's devil-may-care songs, like "Some Enchanted Evening", "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair", "I'm Falling In Love With A Wonderful Guy", and "Honey Bun". The SOUTH PACIFIC Album was the number one selling album of the 1940's. Played flawlessly by the Don Le Master Orchestra. My favorite, though I love the score on this show - but my favorite number is
"I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair". "Some Enchanted Evening"

Romance is the main theme mixed with the ugliness of prejudice we still fight today. Although we have come a long way, we do easily recognize the wrongness and overreacting of Nellie's and Lt. Cable's actions.
In this hit rendition, SDMT has brought in the Broadway talent of Robert J. Townsend. as Emile De Becque - the Frenchman we used to dream about, suave, sophisticated and adorning. Taking on Nellie Forbush, the naive nurse hick, everyone loves is Carolyn Agan. Casey Johnson, plays the handsome Cable. Doing an amazing job, as the clown of the show is Agustine Welles. Gigi Coddington, plays the formidable Bloody Mary. Catrina Teruel her daughter Liat, and John George Campbell and Jason R. Bailly, play the 'officials' doing a fabulous job. Then we have twelve year old Isabella Pruter and Bobby Chu, as the children were adorable. Director Kirsten Chandler pulled together the perfect team, with Choreographer Randy Slovacek, along with Musical Director Don Le Master.

Midsummer is an unusual play, with basically three different stories entwined in one. Regular people … who, in this case, looked to be dressed fifties style. Fantasy creatures … and the ordinary townsfolk who were putting on a play within the play.
Egeus comes to Theseues because he wants his daughter to marry Demetreus and his daughter wants to marry Lysander. Due to law… his daughter Hermia must marry Demtreus or die. Hemia and Lysander plan to run off, but Helena who loves Demeteus tells him. The fairy creature, become involved, and mess everything up - but everything works out for the best.

Strong actresses, Zoe Goldstein, as Hermia - speaking the Shakespearean language difficult, but not only did she handle it, she did so with emotion. Natasha Portnoy, also strong as Helena. Elizabeth Hendricks was a strong Puck. Imahni King-Murillo showed a lot of talent as Lysander. Gavin Hamby, played Oberon - not his best night or role. He had trouble with the Shakespeare. Sarah Chan, played Hippolyta and Titiania. Scene-stealer, and truely funny
Cecelia Harchegani … as Nick Bottom.
Cecelia Harchegani … as Nick Bottom.
Parts I loved … the stage. The stage, that was built for this show, lent to the fantastical element. The colorful fairy costumes … and Titiania's exquisite sparkly goldish fairy queen gown. San Diego Junior theatre always does fabulous costumes. Young actors putting everything they have … into pulling-off Shakespeare.

LOVE, SEX & The I.R.S.
Directed by - Brian Rickel

Per Kathy Carpenter
October 12, 2017 - (El Cajon) – Love, Sex, and the I.R.S. are topics we all think about a lot -- however, most likely not laugh at. This play reminded me of a long episode of the television show "Love American Style," an early ‘70s show. It’s ridiculous and funny.
I was surprised when I read director Brian Rickle's notes, to find he actually used situation comedies from the ‘70s as inspiration … he nailed it!
The set-up, is a bachelor's apartment in New York City in 1983. One roommate is cheating on another, with the woman he is going to marry in two weeks. The cheaters, are looking for a way to tell him. Enter, the cheated-upon - who tells them in order to save money, he told the I.R.S. his roommate, Leslie, was his wife. Now the I.R.S. is paying them a visit. Let the fun issue. The play is kind of a farce … with lots of misunderstandings, comings and goings.

Two actors kind of steal the show. Elaine Pigg as Viviian Trachtman, mother of Jon the fiancée has perfect comedy timing. Also Kian Kline Chilton, as the I.R.S. guy, is incredibly funny. Andrew Dawood played Leslie. a tough role, but he faced it. Ashley Carter played Kate, the female part of the threesome, doing a great job. Isai Moises Luna portrayed Jon, pulling-off the straight man role. Muhammed Alaniwas was the perfect ‘70s landlord type; Alyssa Salacupas played Connie, and Avery Rudmon was Mr. Grunion.
Opening night fell a little short of filling the seats. If you want to laugh at some silly old school television-like comedy (and, who doesn't love those old shows) … make some time to support the Arts!

SAN DIEGO MUSICAL THEATRE
Presents ...

Per Kathy Carpenter:
In 2006, San Diego Musical Theatre was founded by Erin and Gary Lewis. They decided San Diego could benefit from local year round musical theatre. SDMT has come full circle, their inaugural performance at The North Park Theatre. From there, they moved to East County Performing Arts Center for their first full season. SDMT, then moved to the Lyceum, back to North Park - and finally, to the beautiful Historic Spreckels Theater. Twelve years later, they begin their move once again, with "The Full Monty" - starting a new season time at the Horton Grand, A more intimate venue, located in the heart of the Gaslamp District !
"The Full Monty", is a heartfelt fun night. This sentiment was echoed throughout the theatre after the show ... and I couldn't agree more. Based on the 1997 cult movie of the same name director and performer, Neil Dale, took the message of the ten-time Tony award play to heart, coming to understand the reasons the men did what they did. The play is the story of six down-on-their- luck, struggling steelworkers who lose their jobs. Takes place in Buffalo. The men have families to support and can find no real work. Finally desperate they come up with a plan to net their big pay off for one nights work. Kudos to these brave actors, who are not the Chippendale's of men but ordinary guys, whom may not of been exactly comfortable but for the sake of entertaining the masses so to speak, gave the show everything. Did they or didn't they? A question that may come to mind. You have to see the show to find out.

Film - "The Full Monty"
Steven Freitas, played Jerry Lakowski, the leader of the pack. He has a son and although divorced, want's to remain part of his life. He comes up with the idea. His son is played by Owen Schmutz. Danny Stiles, plays his best bud Dave. Doing a fabulous job showing the struggles of an overweight man. My favorite and funniest is the little guy Jonathan Sangster. Richard Van Skyke, Ron Christopher Jones, and Jack Eld, filled out the rest of the endearing souls. Devin, playing Jeanette, almost stole the show.
She was great!
The women leads, the wives, and friends brought us the great voices. The men entertained us with dancing and hi-jinks. The ensemble brought the two together to give us a well-rounded show!

J-Company Youth Theatre:
Presents . . .

J Company Youth Theatre 25th Season continues with Les Miserables. 12 seasons ago, when Joey Landwehr joined the theatre as Artistic director, he wanted to do Les Mis. But a show of this magnitude takes a lot to put on. At long last it's here. Mr. Landwehr wears many hats, and has continue to do a fantastic job with these kids - both on and off the stage.
He also serves as director of their huge productions, featuring large casts. As is especially apparent in this show, all kids are treated equal ... and no kid is left behind. With different stars each show, and everyone given their moment to shine ... no matter who they are.
He also serves as director of their huge productions, featuring large casts. As is especially apparent in this show, all kids are treated equal ... and no kid is left behind. With different stars each show, and everyone given their moment to shine ... no matter who they are.

Landwehr, also teaches the kids life lessons, as they become a family during the show. He also also learns from the kids.
During rehearsal of the show, he asked each cast member, what they were fighting for - and let no one slide without an acceptable answer - nearly bringing tears at times. They learned, even though the show was over a hundred years ago - we have much to fight for today.
Jean Valjean's message is "to love another person is to see the face of God ... Will you join our crusade? ... Who will bestrong and stand with me? ... Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see? ... Say, do you hear the people sing? ... Do you hear the distant drums? ... It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes."
A powerful message that reaches out and grips us all. Carry this message with you always.

My sister loved this production. It has been awhile since I've been able to come out and enjoy J Company. Once again I
was blown away by these remarkable students. A huge cast coming together, as one putting out there best efforts and
entertaining like pros.
My favorite voice for this show Kelsey Lyons played FANTINE - such a tragic story, but with the voice of an angel.
Most powerful performance Natasha Segui as JAVERT ... what a performance! Luis Sherlinee played JEAN VALJEAN - a strong lead. EPONINE, was played by Natalie Feldstein, a wee bit of a thing, a real go getter, with another angelic voice. Molly Nilson, a
brave soul to inspire us all, played COSSETTE - standing second to none. One of the fun roles is THENARIER, master thief,
played by Alex Meeder, was loved by all. The other love-to-hate character, his wife, played by Talia Wexler, was simply fabulous! Probably over a fifty more cast mates, joined in to make this epic show come to life. Hard work by all to bring us true
entertainment.
was blown away by these remarkable students. A huge cast coming together, as one putting out there best efforts and
entertaining like pros.

The score is one of my favorites - "Listen to the People" and "Master of the House," being among my favorites. But I love
them all. If you have not given J Company a chance, come out and give them a chance to win your heart.
The recent shows up for this season "Beauty and The Beast," Mar. 2-18. 2018 & "Hairspray," May 4-13, 2018.
